Louisville Symphonies: The Life and Music of Mildred Jane Hill

March 2026 Afternoon Lecture Series

Event Details

Did you know that the Happy Birthday song was written in Louisville? Yes, the most-sung melody in the world (copyright 1893) was penned right here in our hometown by Mildred J. Hill — composer, pianist, music teacher, and ethnomusicologist. Learn more about the life and times of this talented woman through her many accomplishments from Elizabeth Campbell Rightmyer, Ed.D.

The lecture is presented as part of Locust Grove’s Afternoon Lecture Series, on the first Wednesday of each month, and takes place on Wednesday, March 4. Doors will open at 12:50 PM for desserts and beverages; lectures begin at 1:15.

Please note that ticket prices for the lecture series have increased for 2026; Locust Grove members may purchase tickets for $8, and the general public for $10.

Elizabeth Rightmyer has served as an early childhood specialist and consultant to many local schools, including positions as a primary school teacher, school administrator, and teacher educator at St. Francis – Goshen, The Chance School, Spalding University, UofL, and the Louisville Collegiate School. In retirement, she has championed a memorial celebrating Mildred and Patty Hill to honor the sisters’ many contributions to our hometown and beyond.
