The Cemetery at Locust Grove

The cemetery currently seen at Locust Grove today is a replica of the original Locust Grove’s cemetery–which originally stood about 200 yards north of this location. The stone wall that surrounded the graves stood between three to five feet high, and the walls were 48 feet long.

The original plan for the headstone layout was evidently to have four rows of graves running north and south and the graves facing east.

The Croghan and Clark family members buried at Locust Grove were:

  1. General George Rogers Clark
  2. Mary O’Hara Croghan & Infant Daughter of Mary O’Hara Croghan
  3. Eliza Croghan Hancock
  4. Lucy Clark Croghan
  5. Major William Croghan
  6. Edmund Croghan
  7. Nicholas Croghan
  8. Dr. John Croghan
  9. Colonel George Croghan
  10. Mrs. Eliza McSorley
About the Reinterrments

General George Rogers Clark’s remains were exhumed and reinterred at Cave Hill Cemetery in 1868. He is located in Section P, lot no. 243.

Colonel George Croghan’s remains were exhumed and reinterred at the base of a monument to him in Fremont, Ohio.

The remaining family members’ remains were removed to Cave Hill Cemetery in 1916. They are located in Section I, Lot 146.
