The People of Locust Grove

Locust Grove’s story, like the Croghans and Clarks, is just a part of the story of Kentucky’s beginnings. Situated just six miles upriver from downtown Louisville, this c. 1792 Georgian mansion was the home of William Croghan and his wife Lucy Clark Croghan and their family.

The Women of Locust Grove

For hundreds of years, our nation’s history has been viewed through a patriarchal lens that primarily focuses on the successes and endeavors of men.

At Locust Grove, there have been many prominent men that contributed greatly to the estate, as well as outside of it. While these are incredibly important measures, we also want to ensure that the women of the estate, and their contribution, are not overshadowed.

This exhibition seeks to reclaim the narrative that women of history were mere domestic characters defined by their household duties. It tells the story of their lives as intellectuals, lovers, caretakers, and strong-willed people. Welcome to a new, often unheard, side of history.
