Connected by marriage to William Croghan, he became Jefferson’s Vice-President in 1800. In the spring of 1805 he joined Croghan, George Rogers Clark, and others as a Director of the Indiana Canal Company. He was suspected of trying to form an independent nation in the western U.S., though failed to involved Clark in his plans. In 1806, Burr was arrested, tried for treason, and acquitted.
