Chastian and her children were enslaved by Lucy Croghan’s father, John Clark, and were living at Locust Grove, working for the Croghans, at the time of John Clark’s death. Chastian and her children were left to William Croghan in John Clark’s will in 1799.
While we don’t know when Chastian came to live at Locust Grove or what her exact duties were, it is possible she came with Lucy when she married William and served as a lady’s maid or nanny. This is only a possibility; her exact duties remain unknown.
