President Zachary Taylor

Taylor was a family friend and frequent visitor to Locust Grove.

Son of Locust Grove neighbors, Taylor was a planter and career officer whose casual appearance earned him the nickname “Old Rough and Ready.”

He was a family friend and frequent visitor to Locust Grove. He fought in the War of 1812, the Second Seminole War, and emerged from the Mexican War a hugely popular figure. Elected President in 1848, Taylor opposed the spread of slavery into the territories although he was an enslaver.
